By Mamata Misra
Calling all children, parents, teachers, and mentors!
Think globally act locally!
Help a child in India while having fun reading!
What is Pratham?
Pratham is a non-profit organization that helps underprivileged children in India stay in school and learn well. Working in both rural and urban areas, Pratham’s programs are efficient, cost effective, and scalable.
Pratham has won many national and international awards for its wonderful work in the area of child education and youth empowerment.
Pratham USA supports Pratham by raising awareness and funds. Visit www.prathamusa.org for more info.

What is a Readathon?

Readathon is a fundraising program that operates much like a walkathon, except instead of being sponsored for every mile walked; children are sponsored for the number of books they read.

What is the purpose of Pratham Readathon 2013?
To create a Win-Win-Win Solution to the problem of child illiteracy by enabling kids in the US to Read books, Raise funds, and Help less fortunate kids in India learn to read books.

How will the money raised from this Readathon be used by Pratham?
Pratham’s low cost programs make it Easy to transform the life of a young child. $25 helps to educate one child for one year!

A $250 contribution supports the education of 10 children for an entire year. $1,000 helps 40 children attend school, while $5,000 will enable Pratham to operate one Learning Center for one whole year, providing access to pre-school learning, library facilities, computer and English language skills, after-school tutoring and mentoring programs for more than 120 children.

Who can participate?
Kids of any age can participate as readers. High school kids interested in a leadership role can participate as Readathon Coordinators, guiding and supporting a team of young readers through the Readathon process.

If the child is too young to read, parents or other family members can read to the child and ask for sponsorship, thus participating on behalf of the child. Family and friends of a reader can participate by becoming sponsors and donors.

What are the benefits of participating?
Today’s reader is tomorrow’s leader.
• Pratham Readathon will challenge the participating child to read more books. Reading is a life-skill that can be developed through reading more books. A reader’s verbal and writing skills are greatly enhanced by reading.

• High School Readathon coordinators will develop strong communication, organizational and leadership skills while doing worthwhile community service. Volunteer hours may be used for honor society or any other community service requirements. Experience will look Great on college application essays and resume.

• The child (and his/her sponsors) will get a real story back from India and see how he/she helped a less fortunate kid in India. The child will feel good about helping others and learn the virtues of community service early on.

• Less fortunate children in India get the benefits of tutoring and mentoring in Pratham Learning Centers (after school programs), will stay in school longer, graduate from high school, gain ability to seek employment and earn a decent standard of living for themselves and their families. Education truly transforms lives.

• Parents and sponsors will feel good about being an agent for all of the benefits above.

Are there any other incentives?
Each Reader will receive a Certificate of Appreciation. Medals or trophies of recognition will be given readers who raise $250 or $500 or more. High School Readathon Coordinators will get a Special Letter of Recommendation and a prize.

A Young Reader Award for the reader who raises the most funds, and a Young Leader Award for the Readathon Coordinator who demonstrates strong commitment and leadership skills and whose team raises a significant amount of funds for child education in India will be given by Pratham USA.

What should the child/parent do to participate?

Please contact Mamata Misra misramamata@gmail.com with the reader’s name, phone, email, and grade level. She will contact you, answer your questions and help you get started.

You may also go directly to http://pratham.seeyourimpact.org/readathon2013/ on or after May 5th, and help yourself (or your child) get started. At that time, a toolkit will also be available at www.prathamusa.org/readathon2013 with all the information you will need.

In keeping with its theme, “Building a Better Community, One Step at a Time,” the BAPS Charities 5th annual walkathon was held on Saturday, April 13th, 2013 in Cedar Park, Texas. Over 250 members of the community participated in this year’s walkathon.

Coming together to walk for a singular purpose, participants of all ages joined hands and raised funds to support this year’s local beneficiary, All Blind Children of Texas.

“There are limits to what the city can do, there are limits to what the federal government can do and what the state government can do, and it takes the commitment of citizens to volunteer their time and serve the community,” said Mitch Fuller, the Mayor Pro-Tem of Cedar Park, Texas.

“Being able to organize this kind of event is always an exciting opportunity for BAPS Charities.

Walkathons like these unite members of the community, no matter the age, to serve a great cause. The enthusiasm behind this event is really the driving force to ensuring the success of the today’s event” said Akshar Patel of Austin, TX.

“Not only is it amazing how everyone can come together to support one cause, it is also great to walk with others who believe in building a better community,” said Kirtan Patel of Austin, TX.

“Benefiting All Blind Children of Texas is a great way to bring the community together, and getting a chance to walk with a big group of people who feel the same way is a fun way to get some exercise!”

All Blind Children of Texas (ABCTX) is a local organization that promotes the optimal physical, mental, emotional and social development of all blind children in Texas.

At this very moment there are approximately 8,000 blind children in the state of Texas.

The non-profit organization screens, funds and facilitates the children’s participation in programs, activities, events and projects that provide the extra learning experiences needed to function alongside sighted peers in society.

While sighted individuals learn by observation, blind and visually impaired students need additional time and instruction. These experiences and skills are best taught through the Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs).

Ultimately, it is their goal to help the children learn a plethora of various skills that they will need in their lives such as Braille, daily household responsibilities, traveling independently and safely, as well as social, recreational and leisure skills. With this comes the gift of self-confidence and a desire to step forward and fully embrace all the truly amazing experiences that life has to offer.

“For a blind child, something that is not known to them does not exist. Because of BAPS Charities blind children in Texas will have the opportunity to touch and learn about this great place in which we live,” said Ms. Mary Sue Welch, President of All Blind Children of Texas from Austin, TX.

The 3K walk was held at Brushy Creek Lake Park, 3300 Brushy Creek Road, Cedar Park, TX 78717 and inspired people to not only take the extra step in improving their community, but also advocate a healthier lifestyle.

Also in attendance at this year’s BAPS Charities Walkathon was Mr. Mitch Fuller, Mayor Pro-Tem, of Cedar Park, TX. Mr. Fuller’s presence showed his appreciation for the efforts of the participants.

“Thank you for doing what you do to support not only the local organizations such as the All Blind Children of Texas but also the international organizations,” explained Mr. Fuller.

With many centers participating in similar walks across North America, this is just one of many initiatives that BAPS Charities takes to support local communities.

Throughout the year, BAPS Charities hosts medical fairs, education and career development seminars, blood drives and much more. BAPS Charities sincerely serves the community, by improving the quality of life of individuals and families. For information, please visit www. bapscharities.org

Mumbai, Mar 28 (ANI): Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who has been sentenced to five years in jail for illegal possession of weapons in a case linked to the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts, on Thursday said he will surrender before the authorities as per the Supreme Court’’s direction, and added that he would not be seeking a pardon. “ I will surrender within the timeframe set by the Supreme Court. I have the highest respect for the SC and will abide by the law,” said an emotional Dutt while briefing media here.

“I have a lot of work to finish. Just want to spend this time with my family and finish my work,” he said.
I want to thank everyone who supported me. I love my country. I love India,” he added.

The Supreme Court, which last week upheld the death sentence of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, a key conspirator with Dawood Ibrahim in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, ordered that Dutt return to jail to serve three-and-a-half years sentence for possessing illegal arms.

Dutt, who is out on bail, will also have to surrender within four weeks to serve a jail term of 42 months as the apex court reduced to five years the six year jail term awarded to him by a designated TADA court in 2007 and he had already spent 18 months behind the bar.

A total of 257 persons were killed and 713 others injured when a series 13 coordinated explosions shattered the metropolis on March 12, 1993.

The blasts occurred at 12 places, including Bombay Stock Exchange building, Air-India Building at Nariman Point, at Worli opposite Century Bazaar, Hotels Sea Rock and Juhu Centaur. (ANI)

The growing diversity of the population in Austin area is reflected in the number of ethnic cultural celebrations each year.

Please mark your calendars from May 29th to June 2nd (5 days) for the Main Temple Kumbhabhishekam (Opening Ceremony) at Austin Hindu Temple.

During these five days, numerous homas will be performed and on the final day of Kumbhabhishekam, all the deities will be energized with the holy water from the 300 kalashas that were going to be part of these homas.

Significance of Kalasha Pooja:

Kalash also known as “Kumbh” in Sanskrit is a water vessel or pot, which holds a high significance in the Hinduism.

It’s used in India since Vedic periods. Pooja Kalash is believed to have originated during the Samudra Manthan (ocean churning) event, when Lord Vishnu appeared taking a nectar Kalash.

As per the Hindu scriptures, the Kalash is placed to create a leaf seat for all the invoked deities during a pooja ceremony.

The Kalash is filled with water to keep this leaf seat pure till the Prana Pratishta (invoking of deity into idol), is complete.

Water is the symbol of primordial water from which entire creation emerged.

The major significance of the Kalasha is that it absorbs all the positive energies generated during the homas.

This water with divine energies has immense healing power. Hence the divine water in the Kalasha is sprinkled upon and distributed to the participants at the end of the homas.

The sponsorship for the Kalasha pooja is $101.

However, the devotees who would like to retain the auspicious silver kalasha after conclusion of the Kumbhabhishekam festival may pre-register by paying $301 at the AHT front desk or by mailing a check at AHTCC 9801 Decker Lake Road, Austin, Texas 78724.

Please make sure to write in the memo line: Kalasha Puja.

Online payment can be made by clicking here. Each Kalasha is about 4.5 inches in height and weighs approximately 145 grams.

AHT will give the Kalasha at cost ($200) to the pre-registered devotees.
In order to procure Silver Kalashas in time for Kumbhabhishekam the pre-registration for silver Kalashas will end on April 15th 2013.

Easter (Old English: ?ostre) or the Pasch or (among Eastern Orthodox) Pascha (Latin: Pascha; Greek: ?????, Paskha; ramaic: Pasa; from Hebrew: Pes) is a Christian festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day
after his crucifixion at Calvary as described in the New Testament. Easter is the culmination of the Passion of Christ preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. The last week of Lent is called Holy Week, and it contains the days of the Easter Triduum, including Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday in the Catholic Church), commemorating Maundy and the Last Supper, as well as Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Easter is followed by a fifty-day period called Eastertide or the Easter Season, ending with Pentecost Sunday.

The festival is referred to in English by a variety of different names including Easter Day, Easter Sunday, Resurrection Day and Resurrection Sunday.
Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The First Council of Nicaea established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the March quinox. Ecclesiastically, the equinox is reckoned to be on 21 March (even though the equinox occurs, astronomically speaking, on 20 March in most years), and the “Full Moon” is not necessarily the astronomically correct date.

The date of Easter therefore varies between 22 March and 25 April. Eastern Christianity bases its calculations on the Julian calendar whose 21 March corresponds, during the 21st century, to 3 April in the Gregorian calendar, in which the celebration of Easter therefore varies between 4 April and 8 May. Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar In many languages, the words for “Easter” and “Passover” are etymologically related or homonymous.

Easter customs vary across the Christian world, but attending sunrise services, exclaiming the Paschal greeting, clipping the church and decorating Easter eggs, a symbol of the empty tomb, are common motifs. Additional customs include egg hunting, the Easter Bunny, and Easter parades, which are observed by both Christians and some non-Christians.

The festival of Holi is celebrated because of a story in the old Hindu religion. In Vaishnavism, Hiranyakashipu is the great king of demons, and he had been granted a boon by Brahma, which made it almost impossible for him to be killed.
The boon was due to his long penance, after which he had demanded that he not be killed “during day or night; inside the home or outside , not on earth or in the sky; neither by a man nor an animal ; neither by astra nor by shastra”. Consequently, he grew arrogant and attacked the Heavens and the Earth.

He demanded that people stop worshipping Gods and start praising respectfully to him. Hiranyakashipu, on the lap, being
killed by Narasimha, an incarnation of Vishnu. According to this belief, Hiranyakashipu’s own son, Prahlada, was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. In spite of several threats from Hiranyakashipu, Prahlada continued offering prayers to Lord Vishnu. He was poisoned by Hiranyakashipu, but the poison turned to nectar in his mouth. He was ordered to be trampled by elephants yet remained unharmed. He was put in a room with hungry, poisonous snakes and survived. All of Hiranyakashipu’s attempts to kill his son failed. Finally, he ordered young Prahlada to sit on a pyre in the lap of Holika, Hiranyakashipu’s demoness sister, who also could not die because she had a boon preventing her from being burned by fire. Prahlada readily accepted his father’s orders, and prayed to Lord Vishnu to keep him safe. When the fire started, everyone watched in amazement as Holika burnt to death, while Prahlada survived unharmed. The salvation of Prahlada and burning of Holika is celebrated as Holi. The ritual of witch burning is also present in other spring festivals, like Walpurgis Night. In Mathura, where Lord Krishna grew up, the festival is celebrated for 16 days (until Rangpanchmi) in commemoration of the divine love of Radha for Krishna. The festivities officially usher in spring, the celebrated season of love.

By Ramey Ko

The potential for comprehensive immigration reform during President Obama’s second term increased dramatically earlier this week, after a bipartisan group of US Senators and the President both announced proposals for reform. Many immigrant advocates are particularly hopeful because of the similarity between the two proposals, at least at first glance, and the President’s statement on Tuesday that he will wait and see how the Senate plan develops before deciding whether to submit his own bill to Congress. With a divided Congress and the high partisan tensions of the past few years, immigration reform still faces many obstacles; however, Republicans’ extremely poor performance among Asian Americans and Latinos in the 2012 elections and encouraging statements by leaders in both parties bode well for the prospect of a successful compromise.

A bipartisan group of eight Senators, four Democrats and four Republicans, announced their plan on Monday, and the President followed with a speech in Nevada on Tuesday. Both plans are based on the same basic principles: improving border security, cracking down on the hiring of illegal workers, streamlining and improving the immigration system for future immigrants, and perhaps most importantly, a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States. Providing a way to legalize undocumented immigrants has been among the greatest sources of disagreement between the two parties; the fact that there is now significant bipartisan agreement on a pathway to citizenship, at least in principle, is very encouraging. While many Americans think of Latinos when they think of undocumented immigrants, five of the top ten countries of origin for undocumented immigrants are China (280,000), the Philippines (270,000), India (240,000), Korea (230,000), and Vietnam (170,000).

Both plans also emphasize that the current immigration system is far too inefficient and bureaucratic, and its delays and complexities drive away the most desirable immigrants. Particularly encouraging for the Asian American community, who often rely on skilled worker and student visas to come to the US, both plans call for making it easier for skilled workers and those holding or obtaining advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math to immigrate to the US, as well as increasing the numbers of such immigrants. Both proposals also call for helping investors and entrepreneurs obtain green cards more easily.

On the other hand, there are also serious points of disagreement between the two proposals. President Obama’s plan also emphasizes the need to streamline the process for family reunification, another area heavily relied on by Asian immigrants, while the Senate proposal does not focus much on this area; some Republicans have indicated that family immigration numbers would actually be reduced to accommodate more skilled workers, advanced degree holders, investors, and entrepreneurs. Perhaps the area of greatest concern is the difference between the two proposals on the timing of the pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. While both proposals would require undocumented immigrants to take similar steps on their path to legalization, including a criminal background check, paying back taxes and fines, obtaining work, and going to the back of the line, the Senate proposal would not open up the path until certain triggers for immigration enforcement and border security are met first. President Obama’s speech indicated that some process for undocumented immigrants to obtain legal status would be developed at the same time as enforcement and security efforts, and he also highlighted the need for a quicker path for undocumented immigrants brought here as children, often known as DREAMers after the proposed DREAM Act, which narrowly failed to pass Congress in December 2010.

If something similar to the Senators’ or President’s proposals passes, it will be the most significant reform of US immigration law since the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. For all those waiting to be reunited with their family, those seeking to better themselves through education, those eager to bring their entrepreneurial energy and talent to America, and those who have called America home for almost their entire lives, that day cannot come soon enough.
