STEM Education Workshop conducted by Indo American Prof
Dr. Suren NDwivedi, Professor in Manufacturing at UL Lafayette, conducteda 2-day workshop titled“STEM Preparation through Marine Engineering, Science and Technology Experiences” whichtookplace, recentlyat the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
The free workshop wasopened to high school and middle school faculty members throughout Louisiana.
The workshop is a collaborative project amongVirginia’s Old Dominion University, South Louisiana Community College and the University the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The purpose of the workshop is to increase awareness about careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workforce and to attract students to shipbuilding careers.
Activities included a welcome by Terry Chambers, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at UL Lafayette and Ms. Karol Howerton, Associate Dean of Instruction, South Louisiana Community College who have been highly supportive of the event. Dr. Dwivedi, Board as regents Eminent Scholar and Professor of Manufacturing at UL Lafayette, Louisianaoffered project overview on sea robotics and introducing workshop.
In addition, invited speaker Dr. Alok KVerma, Professor and Director of the Lean Institute at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.,helped participants to study 4 marine kits focusing on the areas of Shipyard Operations, Ship Construction, Ship Stability, and Ship Disaster Investigation, as well as related Marine Tech instructional modules.
Wednesday’s program featured more information about instructional modules for building Sea Perch, developed by MIT. Workshop attendees thenimplemented the teaching modules.
Also, Dr. Dwivedidemonstrated “Virtual Reality Application in Education”which includes making teaching more effective and interesting.Presentation on “Project/Inquiry-Based Learning” ”Application of advanced Robotics for teaching Math’s and Science’s,” “Implementation of Leanand six sigma,”and “Ship building as a career opportunity” were given.
Dr. E. Joseph Savoie,President of UL Lafayette, has been generous in supporting activities that bring awareness of, and which uplift, Louisiana education.In spite of a busy schedule, he attendedthe workshop so meet participating teachers and presented certificates.
Indo American Prof. Dr.Dwivedi, has been continuously organizing conferences in different countries and six workshops in Louisiana under NSF grants that are funding in the areas of Robotics, Lean Manufacturing,Lean Application, Virtual Reality, and Design for Six-Sigma. He has founded two professional societies.
He also founded three Journals, his latest conference ICAM 2012 at IIT-BHUfor which researchers and people form Industries are invited to participate in the conference for better India in the future, for details visit http://www.icam2012.in/.
On the basis of research, teaching and community activities he has been a recipient of many awards including Louisiana’s outstanding Professors award form Engineering foundation and Lifetime achievement award from ISPE/ISAM for outstanding research.
