Austin City Council Passes Resolution Recognizing January as Muslim Heritage Month

Austin, TX - Austin City Council member Zohaib “Zo” Qadri brought forward a resolution recognizing January as Muslim Heritage Month and encouraging City Staff to identify ways the City can support other heritage months observed throughout the City.


Events scheduled throughout the month are aimed at cultivating appreciation for the contributions of Muslims to Austin.


Council Member Qadri had the following to say about Item 55:


“I’m proud that Austin is recognizing Muslim Heritage Month for the first time and honoring the many contributions Muslim Austinites have made to our city.


Our diversity is our strength, and this month is an opportunity to celebrate that truth while fostering greater understanding, connection, and belonging.


We stand with our Muslim community and with all communities, and we remain committed to building an Austin where everyone feels seen, valued, and respected.”


On Jan. 22 at the Austin City Council’s passed a resolution for the entire City Council’s consideration to officially declare January as Muslim Heritage Month in the City of Austin.


In addition to Qadri, Mayor Watson and all Council members co-sponsored the resolution.


Events scheduled for the rest of the month include:


Open Mic Night: Jan. 23, 6-9 p.m., Asian American Resource Center. Celebrate community creativity with Islamically-themed performances by locals of all backgrounds.


Service Day: Jan. 25, 1:30-3:30 p.m., Pease Park. Join the Austin Muslim community and First Baptist Church of Austin to clean the park.


Muslim Entrepreneur Panel: Jan. 31, 2-4 p.m., George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. Leading Muslim entrepreneurs will share insights, experiences and advice on business and innovation.
