By Gulshan Singh

AUSTIN, TX — In a city known for its eclectic spirit, one event is breaking traditional boundaries to proves that “Unity in Diversity” is more than just a slogan. On Sunday, May 17, 2026, the 14th annual Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt (BMBB) gala will transform the Dell Jewish Community Center into a vibrant crossroads of culture, all to ensure local students have the tools to succeed.

Hosted by HC4A in partnership with Shalom Austin, this year’s gala marks a historic expansion.

Since May is officially recognized as both Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, it serves as the perfect backdrop for our communities to unite in celebration and service at the BMBB gala.

The event officially welcomes the Austin African Youth Harvest Foundation into the fold, creating a powerful trilateral alliance of Hindu, Jewish, and African American communities.

A Star-Studded Stage with a Purpose

The evening promises an immersive experience that mirrors the diversity of the guest list. The 2026 artist lineup features:

Samson Koletkar: Known globally as “Mahatma Moses,” the world’s only Indian-Jewish stand-up comedian will serve as Emcee, bringing his trademark sharp humor and cultural insight.

Anuradha Naimpally & Purna Bajekal: The renowned Bharatanatyam soloist and the Assistant Director of Austin Dance India will perform traditional Indian classical dance.

Secret Siren: A genre-blending contemporary vocalist known for immersive, emotionally rich performances.

A “Seat at the Table” for Regional Leadership

The significance of the event is reflected in its high-profile guest list. Confirmed attendees include Cedar Park Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin, and Leander Mayor Na’Cole Thompson. Education leaders, including Manor ISD Superintendent Dr. Robert Sormani and Del Valle ISD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mark Cantu, will also be in attendance to highlight the direct impact the funds have on local classrooms.

Culinary and Community Impact

True to its name, the gala will feature a curated “Fusion Dinner” blending Indian and Jewish culinary traditions, offering guests a literal taste of the cultural intersection.

Every dollar raised during the evening contributes to the HC4A Backpack Program. The initiative culminates on August 2nd, when hundreds of volunteers from across all three communities will gather at the JCC to hand-pack over 1,000 backpacks for students in need.

The Need

BMBB is about the unique cultural and culinary intersections of our neighbors. Beyond the celebration, there is a serious mission: raising the funds necessary to provide grade-appropriate school supplies for children experiencing homelessness and economic hardship in Austin ISD, Round Rock ISD, Del Valle ISD, Manor ISD, and local churches, veteran-serving, and refugee organizations.

With roughly 29% of parents reporting they are unable to afford school supplies, the need for community intervention is critical, especially in Austin where 12.5% of the population lives in poverty. Research emphasizes that grade-appropriate school supplies are not just tools; they are essential for student development, providing a sense of security and engagement while reducing anxiety and absenteeism.

The funds raised at this gala are used to purchase school supplies which are then hand-packed into backpacks at the annual School Supplies Packing (SSP) event (planned for August 2, 2026).

These 2 events (BMBB and SSP) do more than just equip students; they bring diverse communities together—volunteers of all ages and backgrounds—to work toward a shared goal of educational equity.

By delivering these “treasures” directly to schools for distribution, we ensure students facing economic hardship can start their academic year with the confidence, organization, and dignity they deserve.
