World Cup Captain Transforms Austin Cricket

By Gulshan Singh

In a significant development for the cricketing landscape of Austin, TX, Unmukt Chand, the celebrated World Cup-winning captain of India’s U19 team, has been sharing his skills and knowledge with young enthusiasts. He conducts regular batting clinics, an invaluable resource for budding cricketers in the region.

After leading India’s U19 team to a World Cup victory, Unmukt Chand moved to the United States to participate in professional cricket leagues, including the Minor League Cricket (MiLC) and Major League Cricket (MLC). In the inaugural edition of MLC in July 2023, Chand proved his mettle as a key batter for the Los Angeles Knight Riders, a team owned by the renowned IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Chand has been instrumental in coaching and mentoring players across all age groups at WCI Academy in Austin. The academy, founded by Alok Singh, shares a special bond with Chand as both were trained under the same coach, Mr. MP Singh, a retired Sports Authority of India (SAI) Coach.

This premier youth cricket academy, powered by Gary Kirsten, the World Cup and IPL winning coach, grooms young talents to compete in leagues and national championships like MLC Jr throughout the year.

Chand’s batting clinics emphasize mastering the basics through rigorous drills and practice sessions. These two-day clinics, offered regularly during the winter season and beyond, provide a unique opportunity for players and parents to learn from Chand’s experiences, both on the field and off.

Apart from technical skills, Chand strongly encourages young cricketers to write down their learnings and experiences after each training session, a practice he himself adopted under the legendary Bishan Singh Bedi. He has also penned a book titled “The Sky is the Limit - My Journey to the World Cup,” available on Amazon, which offers valuable insights into his journey. For more information, visit www.WCICricket.com.
