AUSTIN, TX — On Sunday, May 17, 2026, the Dell Jewish Community Center (JCC) was transformed into a powerhouse of cultural unity, artistic performance, and philanthropy.
The 13th annual Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt (BMBB) Gala, hosted by HC4A in partnership with Shalom Austin, marked a historic milestone for Central Texas.
This year’s event was defined by an intentional alignment: bridging Austin’s Indian and Jewish communities under a unified mission of service. Aligning with both Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month throughout May, the primary focus of this bilateral alliance was to raise critical funds to secure 1,500+ grade-specific backpacks filled with high-quality supplies for homeless and economically disadvantaged students across the Austin, Round Rock, and Manor Independent School Districts.
Reflecting on the achievement, HC4A leadership highlighted three clear operational goals set during the planning phase, all of which were successfully delivered:
1. Broadening Donor Engagement Across the Community
By uniting these distinct heritage groups, BMBB 2026 attracted an incredibly diverse crowd of local philanthropists, tech mentors, entrepreneurs, and civic allies. The program offered a perfect balance of high-vibe entertainment and mission-driven focus, keeping the audience deeply engaged from the opening welcome to the concluding dinner.
Adding to the energetic atmosphere was the brilliant comedic performance of emcee Samson Koletkar (affectionately known as “Mahatma Moses”), the world’s only Jewish-Indian stand-up comedian. Koletkar kept the audience laughing with a playful, narrative-style ribbing of local Texas hospitality—joking about how visitors from major hubs like Dallas and Houston want to take visitors to Austin instead, and when they get there expecting a local tour, Austin residents immediately pack them up and drive them straight to San Antonio.
Later in the program, Koletkar highlighted the practical precision of the backpack initiative, stressing how the fundraising translates directly to classroom readiness:
“It isn’t just a generic bag of random supplies; every child gets a backpack custom-tailored to their exact school curriculum.” The core of the program’s civic engagement was the “Leaders’ Lightning Round” on stage, which replaced traditional political speeches. This panel brought together prominent regional figures to discuss community-led social impact and educational equity. Below is the direct context and commentary from the participating regional leadership:
Austin Pro-Tem Mayor Jose “Chito” Vela
The Prompt: “Austin is the heart of this eclectic spirit we are talking about tonight. In 30 seconds, why is a cultural fusion movement like BMBB, bringing Jewish, Indian, and African-American communities together, exactly what the City of Austin needs right now?”
The Quote:
“A cultural fusion movement like Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt isn’t just entertainment—it’s exactly what the City of Austin needs to foster deep, lasting community partnerships.”
Cedar Park Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin
The Prompt: “As more families move into Cedar Park and the surrounding areas, how important is it for them to see local leaders standing together right here in this room, actively providing educational equity and addressing basic needs like this?”
The Quote:
“At the end of the day, what makes America special is the core idea of people working together in a community, believing they can shape their own neighborhood because they know what’s best for it.”
Round Rock Council Member Frank Ortega
The Prompt: “Round Rock is famous for its neighbor-helping-neighbor attitude... How does seeing hundreds of volunteers come together to pack these backpacks reflect the spirit you witness every day in your district?”
The Quote:
“We are actively embracing different cultures and ensuring our community is welcoming to everyone. Don’t listen to divisive outside rhetoric; instead, look at the goodness and cooperation we see right here in our local community.”
2. Creating a Stronger, More Rewarding Volunteer Experience
A key priority for BMBB 2026 was ensuring that the team behind the scenes—the drivers, coordinators, stage managers, and designers—felt valued, supported, and connected to the mission. From the vibrant stage coordination of the performances (featuring Secret Siren, Maanasa Iyer, Sara Kaye, Kelia Hopkins, and Austin Dance India) to the registration and security check-ins, volunteers worked seamlessly.
The evening’s musical headliner, Secret Siren (featuring Cassandra Norton and Jayne Ball), perfectly captured the theme of resilience, healing, and community strength. Before playing her dedicated song, “Woman of My Heart,” vocalist and long-time public school educator Cassandra Norton bridged her classroom experience with BMBB’s operational mission:
“I can tell you from decades of experience in the classroom: when children are cared for and have their basic needs met, they show up as their absolute best selves.” The soul of this and every such community event relies entirely on those who step forward to volunteer. Stage Producer Malvika Rao shared a moving, raw perspective on the deep rewards that come from community service:
“Just know that deep down you can always carve out time to collaborate and volunteer when not everything has to be a transaction in life. If you can find the time, you will get the rewards which are like a thousand times better than doing something to earn money.”
3. Achieving Fundraising Goals to Support Our Mission
The real-world impact of the gala’s financial triumph will be felt on Sunday, August 2, 2026, during the annual School Supplies Packing (SSP) event. At this hands-on community gathering, volunteers of all generations will assemble and custom-pack the actual backpacks using the precise grade-level criteria demanded by local school districts. This strategic approach ensures students start their school year with dignity, organization, and confidence. School district leaders shared how these custom resources fundamentally reshape a student’s psychological safety and academic mindset on day one of school:
Dr. Robert Sormani, Superintendent of Manor ISD
The Impact:
“On that very first day of school, the child feels confident, included, and ready to learn, setting a positive tone for their education for the rest of the year.”
Dr. Mark Cantu, Deputy Superintendent of Del Valle ISD
The Impact:
“A child naturally wants to feel integrated and involved with their school community and culture. When we provide these tools, it changes the dynamic because they are empowered to contribute fully.”
The direct beneficiaries of these resources are local students served by critical regional safety nets, including Project HELP in Austin ISD. Carla Scott, representing the program, emphasized how vital these basic tools are for children facing unstable environments:
“For many students, school is not just a place to learn—it’s a place of safety, consistency, belonging, and where hope exists… HC4A’s program is absolutely foundational and essential to making that happen.”
A Celebration of Generosity and Goodwill
A major highlight of the night was the final signature segment: a one-of-a-kind Indian-Jewish fusion dinner: Jewish salads and babka breads from the famous local Jewish baker and classic Indian dinner fare by Rasoi at Anderson Mill. The culinary feast was a representation of the unity felt throughout the venue.
According to representatives from HC4A and Shalom Austin, the milestone success of BMBB 2026 was made possible by the combined goodwill of hundreds of regional volunteers, philanthropic sponsors, and municipal advocates working in tandem.

The momentum generated by the gala will carry directly into the late summer preparation cycle. Organizing committees are already preparing for the volunteer-driven packing drive on August 2, which aims to distribute all 1,500+ supply kits directly to local school liaisons before school sessions resume in mid-August.
