TIME: Stories In Our Hands
By: Yuktha and Shibhany (Teen Leadership Committee)
On August 28th, SAIVA (South Asian International Volunteer Association) helped host an event partnering with IDIA USA.
A teen volunteer Yuktha, one of the leads for the healthcare committee shares her thoughts:
“The purpose of the Stories in Our Hands event is to create a connection between seniors and teens by creating a space for teens to listen and learn from their elders. Seniors will share personal stories shaped by courage, resilience, adapting to change, and important life lessons, while the teens will receive meaningful advice and insight from the seniors’ experiences
The event also raises awareness about dementia for both seniors and teens by increasing awareness, understanding, and compassion around memory health.
The healthcare committee hopes this event will help strengthen relationships, support seniors who share their voices, and help teens grow through intergenerational knowledge.
I feel this event is meaningful because it brings seniors and teens together in a way that supports both groups.

As a teen volunteer, my role in this event is to help coordinate the storytelling portion and support seniors as they prepare to share their experiences.
I’m also helping introduce the themes and guide the teens in understanding the importance of dementia awareness and intergenerational learning.”
Organized by SAIVA’s healthcare committee, the event aims to strengthen community relationships, empower seniors to share their voices, and help teens grow through intergenerational wisdom and memory health awareness.
